What Grok is, and what it is not
Grok is xAI's voice assistant, running on the screen in newer Teslas. You talk to it, it answers conversationally.
It is still beta, and that has one concrete consequence people are surprised by: Grok cannot control the car. Not climate, not music, not navigation. If you are expecting to change the temperature by voice, that is not this.
It is a conversation, not a control surface. On a long drive that turns out to be the more useful of the two.
Check these before you travel
Several things have to line up:
- Premium Connectivity, or WiFi. Grok processes in the cloud. No data connection, no answer, and WiFi does not help you in the middle of Utah. This is the most common reason it appears not to work.
- Compatible hardware. AMD Ryzen infotainment, roughly mid-2021 onward, or AI4. Model Y and Cybertruck generally qualify.
- Current software, and availability in your region.
Hands-free "Hey Grok" is limited to newer cars on top of that. Where it is not available, you start Grok from the screen.
⚠ Ask us before pickup. Our vehicles come from vetted rental partners and equipment varies between individual cars. If Grok matters to you, tell us when you book and we will confirm what that specific vehicle has.
What it is genuinely good for
Keeping kids occupied. This is the most-cited benefit from our families by a distance. The questions parents have run out of answers for by mile 400, Grok will happily take.
Context on what you are looking at. Why the rock is that color, what happened here, what that plant is. It is a decent companion for curiosity, which is most of what a long drive produces.
Practice and conversation on empty stretches, in several languages.
Where it stops
Being straight about this so you plan correctly:
- No signal, no Grok. Large parts of the national parks have no coverage. Exactly where the landscape is most spectacular, it goes quiet. Your route, charging stops and campsites must not depend on it.
- No vehicle control. Beta, as above.
- It does not know your booking. Grok has no idea which car you rented, what gear is aboard, where you pick up, or what your package includes. It knows Teslas, not your trip.
- Beta means beta. Features change, and I would not take its word on anything safety-related without checking.
